What's that sweet snack being sold at the fair booth? What did you say? "Deep fried Coca-Cola"? That's right! This carnival food is being sold left and right at functions, fairs, and concession stands all over the nation. The best way to describe this concoction? Well, that is to take the funnel cake batter, pour the cola in, fry it in a bucket of grease and top it with powdered sugar. Oh! Don't forget the cherry on top! Sound good? Gives new life to deep fried Oreos?

Fried Coca-Cola

First you'll have to make the Coca-Cola Syrup for the topping. You can buy this if it's available, but I can't find it in my area. Many people mistake the sweetened Coke syrup used in this recipe for the awful tasting cough like variety. It isn't the same people!

Ingredients you will need:

  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of cocoa
  • 1/4 can of Coca-Cola
  • 1/4 cup of butter, unsalted
  • 1 tablespoon of light corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract

Mix the sugar, cocoa, cola, butter and syrup in a saucepan. Over medium heat, bring to a boil. Stir constantly, cook until it becomes thick. This should be about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside and make the batter.

*When making confections in a saucepan, it's best to use a heavy bottom pan to avoid scorching the mixture.

To get started in the batter you'll need:

  • A large frying pan
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups of Coca-Cola soda
  • Vegetable Oil

For later:

  • The prepared Coca-Cola syrup
  • Powdered sugar
  • Whipped topping
  • Maraschino cherries

Mix the batter by combining the flour, baking powder, eggs and cola together. The batter should be thin, like funnel cake batter. If it's too thin, add some more flour. If it's too thick add a bit more cola. Keep some cola on hand in case the batter thickens up on you.

Fill the frying pan, nearly full of vegetable oil. Leave a few inches at the top. Heat the oil on medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot and ready to go, it's time to start frying. Either use a funnel or large scoop to drizzle the batter into the hot oil in a circular motion. Use about 1/4 to 1/3 of the batter at a time.

Fry on each side until golden brown. Use tongs to flip and handle it. Remove from the grease and place on a paper towel to dab up the excess grease.

There are two ways to serve the deep fried Coca-Cola: 1) Just simply sprinkle with powdered sugar, top with the syrup and a cherry. Then serve. 2) Break the cake up and layer into a tall clear cup (clear cup is for the visual effect). Top with the powdered sugar, syrup and cherry. You can also add cinnamon or nutmeg if you like. Oh, don't forget a dollop of whipped topping!
