Have you ever found yourself in a situation where everyone around you has out their Christmas cookies, and there you are with no skills. No one ever taught you how to make great Christmas cookies and now you have to perform. What if you have children and they are looking forward to that decorating cookie time, and you are the greatest parent in the world, what about then? If you don't already have your game on then now is the time to learn, after all, everyone knows how to make Christmas cookies right? Well, that is not necessarily true, and if you are one of those people that don't know how to make cookies, then I am going to tell you how.

First thing first, you need to get organized. Get together your Christmas cookie recipes and get very acquainted with the ingredients, the pan, and the oils or butter that you must use. By all means start out with simple ingredients with just a basic recipe. If you will do it this way, then you can add to your recipes later. Someone may have a recipe that made you want to attempt this, but if it is too complicated then you are setting yourself up for failure. So simple is the word.

Here is a simple recipe dough that you can master while you are learning how to make great Christmas cookies. After you have this down, then add ingredients to it that you really like. You will get better at it as you go.

Basic Cookie Dough

2 sticks of butter

1/2 cup of brown sugar

3/4 cups of granulated sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon of baking soda

That's it! If you want to pick up chips, nuts, sprinkles, or food coloring by all means do so. You can also go ahead and purchase some cookie cutters. First, however, let's master this. You will want to bake these cookies on a cookie sheet or a large flat baking pan.

Okay now that you have all of the ingredients you should measure them out and set them aside. Go ahead and preheat your oven to 375 degrees. This will be warming up while you mix your ingredients.

Now that your oven is preheating and your ingredients are measured, it is time to start mixing your ingredients. You need to cream the butter and sugar until fluffy. You do this by using a mixer or a hand pastry blender. You will want to leave the butter out of the fridge for awhile so that it will soften. Do not melt it in the microwave because it will turn into liquid. Either way, hand blend or beat these ingredients together until they are fluffy in texture. When this is done you need to add in the eggs and butter and mix them well. Use a different bowl to blend the flour and baking soda together. After this is done slowly add it into the creamed butter mixture. Mix ingredients as you go. When you are done roll out the cookies onto a counter and use the cookie cutters to cut them with. Place on a flat pan and place them into the preheated oven and cook them for about 10 minutes. Yeah, you are done!

Now that you have successfully made your first batch of cookies, you can prepare to become the go to person for the art of baking cookies. Since you have more confidence in your baking cookie abilities next time add chips, nuts, or sprinkles and aquire more skills as you go.
