In these tough economic times, everyone is looking for ways to make extra money. One way increase your income is by writing articles online. There are a variety of websites that are consistently looking for content. Some of these sites pay flat fees per article, while an overwhelming majority of them require you to sign up for a Google Adsense account in order to get paid.

The two most popular sites that provide upfront flat payments for article submissions are Demand Studios and Helium. Demand Studios is probably the preferred site to write for because of their simple, strait forward payment system. In order to start writing articles for Demand Studios, you must submit and application and a writing sample. Demand Studios generally looks for writers who have a college degree and some writing experience. If you qualify and are accepted into the Demand Studios writing program, you will be able to select titles to write about from their assignment list or you may create your own title. At last count, there were over 200,000 available assignments on the list which pay between $7 and $20 per submission. The site is a fairly reliable and consistent source of work. Helium also provides flat payments for article submissions that are "selected". You "bid" on article titles by submitting a completed article, however, if you are not chosen as the "winner" among the various bids, you will have wasted your time.

Infobarrel, Hubpages, and FireHow are three popular article submission websites that allow you to generate additional income by creating a website platform for your articles that integrates Google Adsense. These sites do not pay you directly and you do not have the opportunity to submit articles for a flat rate. Google Adsense is a tool that allows to place advertisements on your article. When visitors view or click on an ad that is on your page or article, Google will pay you a portion of the ad sale price.

In order to start writing for Infobarrel, Hubpages, or FireHow, you need to set up a user account. This is usually a fairly easy and straight forward process that involves providing your name, a user or "community" name and a password. Once you have a user account you can create articles on just about any topic imaginable and watch your earnings from Google Adsense earning grow overtime.

I write for Demand, but haven't tried Helium. Places like Infobarrel, while they don't have the upfront pay, are much more satisfying to write for because of the freedom to select any topic you choose. It's also nice knowing that your articles will likely always earn you an income, rather than just the one-time payment you get from upfront sites.

Not sure that I'd recommend Helium, krisw. I haven't personally used them myself, however, they have gotten a TON of bad publicity.

One has to be careful to listen to isolated comments of disgruntlement, however, when ALOT of users are saying negative things, I can't help but take notice...

Helium has changed a lot since 2007. The frequent change in the payment scheme probably upsets many writers.
Helium had cleaned up the site to get rid of short articles several times. That had enraged the writers who joined much earlier as well.
I think many writers are upset since they cannot figure out the rating system and the writing score.
