My husband and I had these Sweet and Sour Meatballs at local Chinese restaurant. I looked everywhere for a recipe so I could make this dish at home. Couldn't find one, so I decided to play around with some ingredients and this is what I came up with. Turned out very well. Try it, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Sweet and Sour Meatballs

Things You Will Need

1 -pound ground chicken or turkey
vegetable oil
bread crumbs
1- egg
1/2- cup lemon juice
2- tablespoons cornstarch
2- tablespoons soy sauce
1/2- cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
1-20 ounce can chuck pineapple, in heavy syrup, drained. Reserve juice
1/3- cup onion, coarsely chopped
red, green and yellow peppers, 1/3-cup each, coarsely chopped
large skillet with lid
cooked rice

 

Cooking Sweet and Sour Chicken Meatballs

Step 1

Combine the ground chicken, egg and bread crumbs, add just enough bread crumbs 
to enable you to make meatballs that hold together. In the large skillet and oil cook
the chicken meatballs until done. Remove from skillet and drain. Set aside.

 

Chopp the peppersStep 2

Chop the peppers and set aside.
In the same skillet that you cooked the meatballs, combine lemon juice, 
pineapple juice and cornstarch. Mix well. Cook over medium heat, stirring 
until mixture thickens. When thickened, add brown sugar, soy sauce and 
peppers. Cook for about 5 minutes. Stir often so it doesn't stick.

Add the pineapple chucks, onion and chicken meatballs. Cover and 
cook on low for 8 to 10 minutes, or until peppers are tender crisp. 
Stir carefully every few minutes.
Serve over beds of warm cooked rice.

 

Serves 4.
Can also add sliced carrots and sliced celery.
Can use ground turkey, ground pork or ground beef
