How to Make a Tofu Smoothie Even Healthier By Adding Chia

A tofu smoothie is one of the most nutritious smoothie choices around. They are also delicious! If you've only ever tasted fruit smoothies, you are really missing out. Fruit smoothies are definitely good for you, but they are also high in sugar, so if you drink only fruit smoothies you are not getting all the nutrients that you would get from a more complete choice such as a green smoothie or a tofu smoothie.

How about the taste? Well, if you've only had tofu fried or baked, you may wonder how it tastes in a smoothie. Wouldn't it be a bit weird? Not at all. First of all, you're not cooking the tofu you add to your smoothie. Secondly, you use firm tofu when cooking, and you use what's called silken tofu when making a tofu smoothie.

Silken tofu has a soft, silky texture. It falls apart as soon as you look at it, so it's the perfect choice for blending up into a smoothie. A smoothie made with tofu will have a thick, creamy texture. If you like your smoothies thinner, of course, you can just add more water, soy milk, or juice and get it the perfect texture to suitlose your taste.

Now the main health benefit of adding tofu to your smoothies is that tofu is high in protein. A blueberry banana smoothie may be delicious, but it's not high enough in protein to be a really ideal breakfast choice, especially if you're trying to lose weight safely and are headed to the gym or out for a jog around the lake.

So just take that yummy fruit smoothie and blend up a cup of silken tofu with it, and you are all set! You will get that protein that your body needs, and have as much energy as if you started the day with sausage and eggs - except all-vegetarian, of course!

Okay, so now that you've added tofu to your regular smoothie, why bother adding chia seeds? Well, tofu is a good base and adds necessary protein to your diet, but chia is on a completely different level. If you've never heard of chia seeds you may be surprised to learn that it is often called nature's complete superfood! This is because it's so incredibly high in omega-3 fatty acids that it rivals salmon and other fish oils. In fact, chia is the single highest plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids on the planet.

Add to this the fact that chia seeds are packed with vitamins, have as much protein as nuts, are raved about by dieters and weight loss fanatics, and best of all it only takes a couple of spoonfuls to get your complete set of nutrients for the day...well, you will see why so many people are turning to chia as an all-natural, easy to prepare, and side-effect free smoothie addition.

Here is a sample recipe to get you started with a yummy tofu chia smoothie.

  • 1 cup silken tofu
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup soy milk
  • 1/2 cup soy yogurt
  • A handful of strawberries or blueberries
  • 2 tablespoons black or white chia seeds

You don't need to do anything to the chia beforehand. Just raw out of the bag is perfect. Enjoy the chia seeds health benefits and the great taste of a chia tofu smoothie!
