How to Make the Switch from Cable TV to Internet Viewing

Making the switch from Cable or Digital television to Internet viewing can save you $50-$100 a month. The process is simple and takes less than thirty minutes. You may have been thinking about this option for a long time and just didn't know how to do it. Things You Will Need

To make the switch from Cable to Internet content viewing you will need:

  • A desktop or laptop computer.

  • An external monitor. (optional for laptop users)

  • A wireless mouse and keyboard.

  • DSL or Cable Internet service.

  • Wireless Internet. (optional)

  • A free Boxee account.

  • A free Hulu account.

  • A Netflix account. (optional for streaming movies)

Step 1

  1. Ensure that you have a DSL or Cable Internet service package. This package will need to be high speed. If you are setting Internet viewing in more than one room you will need to ensure that you have Internet access in each room you will be making the switch from cable to Internet viewing in. You will need to check with your Internet provider for instructions on in home networking to ensure each computer and room is set up properly if you have not already done so. Depending on your choices for rooms and set up you may need the optional Wireless connection, mouse, monitor, and keyboard at this time.

Step 2

  1. Go to http://www.boxee.tv and register for a free account. This step takes literally two minutes. Boxee allows you to search for only legal content across the internet. You can search for television shows, interviews, videos, music, and movies across the internet and view them through Boxee.

Step 3

  1. Go to http://www.hulu.com and register for a free account. Hulu is a free service that houses television programs and movies. There are some movies and television programs that may require age verification via the users free account. Hulu also offers features to registered users that are not offered to non-registered users.

Step 4

  1. Go to http://www.netflix.com and register for a membership. Membership prices vary. I personally only wanted Netflix to watch shows and movies that were not available on Hulu or through network television websites. For unlimited streaming viewing the cheapest plan is under $10 a month.

Step 5

  1. Cancel your Cable television subscription. Congratulations! You have installed and setup everything you need to make the switch from cable to Internet content viewing. It was really that easy.

Congratulations! In less time than it takes to go get take-out you have made the switch from cable television to Internet viewing. In addition to Hulu, Boxee, and Netflix you can also access your favorite shows on their network websites. Many stations such as FX, ABC, CBS, and NBC show programs within 24 hours of air time. With these legal options there is no need to pay high cable or digital bills. Making the switch from cable television to Internet is the best and most versatile choice for anyone wanting to save money without sacrificing their entertainment.
