Exercise may not be the most spoken word in your vocabulary, but if you look it up, it has many definitions such as "Physical activity and movement, especially when intended to keep a person fit, strong, and healthy." It is one word in your vocabulary that you should take seriously since it will help you stay healthy both physically and mentally. Starting any type of exercise will not only make you healthier in general, but it can also diminish the effects of stress on your body.

When you are not feeling well and the Doctor says "it's stress related" take a step back and look at your lifestyle. Is there physical activity in your routine or have you become sedentary? The truth is that stress will play a role in many diseases and you can deal with, and help eliminate, it. Get off the couch or push yourself away from the computer and exercise, participate in an activity or do something physical.

Exercise can be an extremely effective stress reliever for several reasons:

1. Outlet for frustration. As life becomes annoying turn to high-energy exercise such as boxing or weight lifting. This increase in activity provides an effective release of negative emotions and turns the unhealthy emotions into motivation for increased health and well-being.

2. Increase 'feel good' hormones. Exercise decreases 'stress hormones' and increase endorphins, giving your mood a natural 'feel good' boost.

3. Distraction. Physical activity provides an opportunity to think about something else besides what is 'stressing you out'. As you feel yourself unwinding your thoughts could lead you to a resolution of the stressful situation or encourage you to 'smell the roses' and relax.

4. Look good, feel good. A personal benefit of exercise and activity is it helps you lose weight, tone your body, and maintain a healthy look. Now, when you put on that new outfit, you will see results and project an increase in confidence and strength.

5. Social support. Being active usually includes being around others. Having others to exercise with at the gym, taking a walk with a friend, or playing organized sports with co-workers, provides a double dose of stress-relief with the combination of exercise and fun with friends.

6. Stress and illness. Stress can cause illness, illness can cause stress. By improving your overall health with exercise and activity you will save a great deal of stress by strengthening your immunity to colds, the flu and other minor illnesses and helping you stay healthier longer. You will enjoy life more because of it.

Exercise is an easy, and fun, way to improve your health and decrease your stress level. In this definition exercise is defined as movement. Try simple types of movement such as bending, stretching, sit-ups or walking. There is no need to buy expensive exercise equipment as you can implement more movement into your daily routine and reap the benefits.

An activity you can do anywhere and anytime is aerobic exercise. Grab a partner and have a blast with an aerobic exercise video or go for a walk, with a fast pace to increase your heartbeat, and enjoy spending time together. Walking is a great exercise you can do for your overall health as well as stress.

Think about increasing your activity level as you go through your daily activities. Make it a point to use the stairs, walk a little farther, or bend down and pick something up and then bend again. While you are sitting do some simple and quick stretches for your neck and shoulders.

If you tend to stay close to home consider buying a jogging board. This is a padded board you use to make running, jumping, or walking in place less stressful on your knees and joints. This is an inexpensive piece of equipment and is stored easily.

There is no way to avoid stress but you can take steps to be healthier and combat the effects stress plays on you. Exercise, activity, and even simple movements will help keep you stronger, more fit, and provide ways to manage stress in your life.
