Never Miss a Payment

Credit cards provide us with convenience, build our credit histories, and provide a safety net in an emergency. On the other hand, the convenience of plastic can lead to high balances and thousands of dollars paid in interest. One of the easiest ways to ensure that you never experience the negative side of credit is to set up automatic payments for each of your accounts. In just a few minutes you will never have to worry about missing a payment, running up a balance, paying interest, or your credit score.

Things You Will Need

Account information for each of your credit cards
Account information for your checking account
Internet access

Step 1

Log onto the website for each of your credit cards. The web address can be found on the back of the card.
If you haven't set up an online account you will need to create one. This can usually be done using the sign-up or register link near the login boxes. Each site will walk you through their account set up process, all you need to do is follow their instructions and provide the information asked for.

Step 2

Each website will be slightly different, but you will be looking for a link for account services or online payments. If you are not sure where to look read the FAQ or call the number on the back of the card and ask.

Step 3

In the account services sections or online payments section you will find a link for automatic payments. Here you will be able to link your checking account to your credit card account. This will allow you to make online payments.

Step 4

Once your accounts are linked you can set up to pay off the total balance each month or make the minimum payment. It is great if you can pay off your balance every month, but if you can't at least make the minimum payment. This will save you from ever paying late fees or hurting your credit score. If you can't commit to paying off the total balance each month, think of the automatic minimum payment as a safety net that ensures you never miss a payment. Then each month that you can pay off your balance manually.
Congratulations you have just simplified your financial life! Remember even if you can't pay off your balance each month, set up to automatically pay the minimum payment. You have to pay it anyways, you might as well never miss it.

Tips & Warnings

It may take one or two billing cycles for the automatic payment to kick in so make sure to check your account and make a manual payment if needed.

If you set up to make the minimum payment, you can still pay off the balance every month manually.
