How to Open a Clothing Store for Hunters

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

According to the U.S. Wildlife Service, approximately 12.5 million people enjoy hunting as a recreational activity or hobby in the U.S. each year, and as a group they spend nearly 23 billion dollars on hunting equipment and supplies. Part of their hunting expenditures are spent on clothing that camouflages them with the natural environment making it easier to hunt their prey. To make a profit in this billion dollar industry providing camouflage for hunters, it's important to learn how to start a hunting clothing company.

Establish a plan for your business. Use the resources available from the Michigan Small Business Development Center to help you draft a plan for how to start and operate a hunting clothing company. Consider what financing you need to start the business as well as how you'll market it to make it a successful venture. Add in goals and a timeline along with a plan of how to employ and manage staff.

Apply for loans. Visit the website of the U.S. Small Business Administration to learn what special loans exist for people who need financing to start their own small business. Speak with a credit union or bank loan officer to discuss a commercial or business loan from a financial institution in your community. Sell them on financing your hunting clothing company by providing them with a copy of your business plans as well as detailing how you plan to make the business a success.

Register your business. Get a federal tax identification number for your hunting clothing company by completing the form from the website of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or calling the Business and Specialty Tax line at 800-829-4933. Complete the forms required by your state and city to collect and pay sales tax on each item of clothing you sell in your business. Obtain a local business license from your city hall or county government building as this allows you to operate your business in your physical location.

Obtain a facility. Search for commercial properties available in your area using the LoopNet website or hire a real estate agent to assist you. Seek out a place that has enough room to display hunting clothing and accessories to customers while also providing storage out of the customers' sight where you can keep extra supplies.

Obtain clothing. Determine if you plan to make the clothing or purchase and resell it. Find out the different companies that make and manufacture hunting clothes. Contact them to learn if you can purchase their products directly from them to sell in your store or if they contract with a wholesale supplier. Purchase other hunting accessories to sell in addition to the clothing as a way to sell more products and make a larger profit.

Hire staff. Find employees knowledgeable about hunting who also have great customer service skills to work in your hunting clothing company. Employ an office assistant or bookkeeper to manage the financial aspects of your company including taxes, daily cash deposits, payroll and record keeping.

Promote your business. Use radio, television and the newspaper to spread the word about your hunting clothing company to the general public. Create a website that allows people to purchase hunting clothes online as this helps increase your profits since anyone from around the world can purchase your clothing rather than just people living in your local area. Offer special deals prior to the start of hunting seasons as a way to get people into your business to get what they need to start the season off right.
