How to Pick Up Insurance for Your 18 Year Old

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

You plan to gift a car to your teenaged son on his 18th birthday. While the whole family is excited about welcoming the new member of the family, you are worried about how to pick up insurance for this car. You want to be careful and do not want to go for the cheapest insurance possible, as it might not be worthwhile after all. Even if it works out a bit expensive, you want to pick up insurance for the car, which is going to be most suitable for this young driver. At the same time, you also have to keep an eye on your budget and want something affordable.

The first thing that you need to teach your son is to keep his driving records as clean as possible to save on insurance. Boys in their teens want to show off their driving skills and usually end up with a few tickets which unnecessarily hike up the rates when you want to pick up insurance. Even if your teenage son manages to get one ticket per year, it accumulates over a three year period and may cost him a pile when he wants to renew his policy for the future. Let him not learn this important lesson the hard way, it is better he gets to know this from his parents.

As a parent, you are primarily concerned about the safety of your son. If this is the case, then refrain from buying him a sports or a luxury car. Remember teen drivers meet with more accidents during their driving life, than adults. It is natural for them to race, speed and generally become road hogs when they drive their first car. To top it, if he is behind the wheels of a flashy sports car, he is more likely to speed. Results from such speeding may not always be very welcome for his life and for the family's happiness. So before you pick up insurance for the car, decide on the model you are going to choose for him, as this would impact the insurance rates also.

When you go to buy the insurance policy the car insurance company would request for the expected mileage that the car is expected to cover in a year. Mileage is directly proportional to the rate of increase of insurance rates. Therefore it is your responsibility to teach your son to use the car optimally, if he too wants to save on insurance.

Do you know that there exists a concept called a 'good student discount' that applies to car insurances for young students? If your son is a good student and manages good grades every semester or quarter, the insuring company is likely to give a good discount for the car insurance. All you need to do is to send his report card to the car insurance company when you visit them to pick up insurance.
