How to Pick a Weight Loss Plan That Will Work For You

Choosing the right weight loss plan is a very important decision. Not every weight loss plan is ideal for every dieter. Some of the factors that you'll need to consider are your age, activity level and health concerns. Diabetics and heart disease patients will have vastly different needs from those without major health concerns. Losing weight doesn't have to be a struggle since there are several good plans, such as Zone Diet and NutriSystem, to choose from. Most allow you to eat many of your favorite foods.

Consider Special Health Needs

If you need to lose weight due to a health problem, you'll want to ask your doctor for advice. He can provide you with an appropriate weight loss plan. A heart patient will generally require a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and a diabetic will require a low-sugar, low-carbohydrate diet. In both cases, moderate exercise is also recommended. Older or disabled people who are less active might also have special dietary needs. Dieters who are less mobile may need to focus on a lower calorie intake.

Choose a Plan that Includes Appealing Meals

It will be much harder to keep to a diet that doesn't allow you to eat foods that appeal to you. When possible, try to select a weight loss plan that closely matches your regular diet. You should still be able to eat a lot of the foods that you like in smaller portions. One thing that many dieters will be glad to know is that desserts can still be an option. The majority of weight loss plans include low-fat or sugar-free dessert options. If you feel like you're making less of a sacrifice, it will be easier to keep to your diet.

Consider Making Substitutions

Sometimes all that a person needs to do to lose weight is change some parts of their diet. This is especially true for dieters who like to snack or drink sugary beverages. Consider snacking on pretzels, trail mixes or nuts instead of chips. Corn chips can be eaten with low-fat dips. Instead of a snack high in sugar or fat, try some fresh fruit. Regular sodas, juices or teas sweetened with high fructose corn syrup can contribute to weight gain. If you don't like diet sodas, try sugar-free juices or unsweetened iced tea.

Don't Be Afraid to Mix and Match

Sometimes you'll find meals from more than one diet plan that fit your needs. If you want to keep your weight loss plan exciting, consider using meals that you've found from different plans. You'll be more enthusiastic about your diet if it's always interesting. This can also be helpful if you have certain medical conditions. For example, many diabetics also have heart problems. A person with both conditions will need to watch their sugar, as well as their fat intake. People with dairy allergies or lactose intolerance who eat meat may benefit from using vegan substitutions for dairy dishes. This allows them to avoid discomfort and allergic reactions while still getting necessary animal protein.
