How to Plan Your Next Home Decor Project

By Edited Aug 4, 2016 0 0

Do you long for a new look in your home, but you just don't know how to get started? Don't fret – it's not that hard. Here is a step-by-step way to plan a successful home décor project.

♦ What's the Plan?

First step – pick your project, narrow it down and define it. Many people get derailed before they even start because their project is too broad – like "I need to redecorate my house." Starting that way will almost always destine the project for failure. It lends itself to the "shot gun" approach where you scatter around to do a little in this room and then a little in that room. Before you know it, you've got four or five unfinished projects, you've spent a whole bunch of money and you've got nothing much to show for it. It's discouraging and it usually results in the homeowner becoming frustrated and giving up.

A better approach is to select a more focused project like a specific room in the house – your living room for example – then start by planning for the basics. Begin to think about walls, floors, furniture and lighting; then write down the purpose of the room to help you further define what you will need. Here's an example:

The Living Room Project -- Total Budget: $1,000
Purpose: Create a living room for family/friends to socialize and watch TV

Now you're ready to create a budget.

♦ Establish a Budget

Some people skip this step – but, it's really an important tool to start with. A realistic budget is the foundation of a good plan. Start by determining how much money you have available for the whole project – then break it down into the basics while keeping an eye on the purpose of the room. Here's an example:

The Living Room Project -- Total Budget: $1,000
Purpose: Create a living room for family/friends to socialize and watch TV

Basic Elements
$50 Wall Coverings
$200 Flooring
$400 Furniture
$150 Lighting
$200 Accessories

Using a budget plan as guidance for your project will help you to not sabotage your own efforts. In this example, it's easy to see that with a $1,000 budget, buying an $850 floor covering would leave you without funds to complete your room. Try to work within your budget – moving allotted amounts from one category to another as you go along. If you find a perfect area rug for $50 at a garage sale, you can move $150 to your furniture allowance, etc.

Now that you've got your plan, purpose and a budget, you're ready to look for inspirations and ideas to start your project. Working with these as a foundation will strengthen your ability to create a beautiful space you can be proud of.
