When a person has his hands on his very first guitar for the very first time, the experience can truly be a memorable one. All the while, a person can imagine himself rocking hot guitar solos in a crowd of thousands.

While this is the image that first comes to most beginners' minds, the road to mastering the instrument is a bit arduous and challenging. Make no mistake about it though – the guitar is not to be feared. One only has to learn how to position his fingers in the proper frets and strings to start playing simple songs.

For information on how to play guitar tabs, all you have to do is keep reading. A guitar tablature is one of the best diagrams that will explain how a song is played. There are six horizontal strings, which represent the six strings of your guitar.

There are also numbers placed on each string. These numbers aren't just random numerals placed on the strings. They represent the fret which must be pressed by your fingers in order to play the tab right. For example, A "3" mark on the string means that one has to play that particular string on its third fret.

Some strings do not have numbers on them; instead they have X marks. This means that the string must not be played. Also, some strings are marked with "0." This means that that string has to be kept open – no finger on the string must be placed.

Just strum the string freely. While this is the first step on learning how to play guitar tabs, the next steps are quite hard. So, it is best advised to master one's eye-finger coordination first with basic tablatures, rather than immediately jumping on hard riffs and variations.

There is one additional thing you must remember when you read beginner guitar tabs. The tabs do not tell you how fast or slow you must play the string. Thus, it is best to listen to the song you are trying to play before you practice on it. If you've memorized the melody of the song, and you've mastered how to play a guitar tabs, then you are good to go.
