How to Prevent Liver Disease

By | Mar 16, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0
Responsible for many of the vital metabolic functions in our bodies, our livers are one of our most important organs. Of all of the functions our livers perform, a vital one is to move toxins out of our bodies.

Virtually every nutrient available is required by our livers so that it can function optimally. Fruits and vegetables are the foods that are highest in nutrient content and therefore should be an important part of our daily intake of foods. Foods that are highly processed are difficult on our systems. Our livers cannot filter out all of the toxins and high levels of saturated fat that is so prevalent in these foods.

To aid our livers in detoxification, it makes sense to avoid conventionally grown produce that can contain high levels of pesticides and herbicides. Organic is best as it will save your liver the hard work it needs to do in order to filter out these pesticides from our bodies.

Drinking alcohol containing beverages is also hard on our livers. If possible, eliminate or avoid the consumption of alcohol. The resources needed to metabolize it through our livers will cause other metabolic functions to be neglected. There is only so much your liver can do at any given time.

Fatty foods and foods that are high in hydrogenated oils are hard on the liver as well. When it is forced to process large quantities of fat, it just cannot function at an optimal level.

If you are a salt eater, try to minimize your intake of table salt. Switching to unrefined sea salts is a better option. Himalayan and Celtic are wonderful sea salts that are full of minerals. Use flavors and spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, garlic, vinegar, pepper, onion, mustard and thyme. These are all wonderful flavorings that will add an antioxidant boost to any meal. Plus, they are good for your liver.

To support the optimal functioning of your liver, take a milk thistle supplement. For over 2,000 years, milk thistle has been used in society as an herbal remedy. Typically, it has been used to aid in the resolution of liver and gall bladder ailments. Research has shown that its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties will protect our livers and help them to detoxify as well as propagate new cells. It can help to repair damage that is done to the liver by long-term use of acetaminophen and other common drugs. High doses of these over-the-counter drugs can cause damage to the liver.

Foods high in sulfur are also protective. Onions, garlic and cruciferous vegetables (such as cabbage, broccoli, collards and others) help the liver to perform its metabolic function.

Changing your lifestyle to include elements that are supportive to our livers is an important way to retain optimal health.
