How to Prevent Pest Infestation at Home Using Practical Methods

By Edited Jun 9, 2016 0 0

Any residential building can be infested with various types of pests in a matter of weeks, especially if preventive steps are not taken. Although employing the services of professional exterminators can address the problem, it is not always a good solution.

You have to realize that the products used to eliminate pests are usually commercial grade. This means that they are eliminating pests using concentrated chemicals that can have negative side effects to you, your family, or your pets. Most of these pesticides contain poisons and other substances that can leave residue behind. With that said, it is best to take preventive measures before infestation can occur. Thankfully, there are natural and easy ways to help you in keeping pests, such as roaches, mice, ants, and fleas, out of your property.

Tips To Keep Pests Out

Clean Your Kitchen: Pests are attracted to moisture and food. They are always on the lookout for food sources. The kitchen is a common target for pests since it is where you prepare, serve, and store food. If you let food crumbs and spill sit on your kitchen without cleaning them up immediately, it will attract these unwanted guests. With that said, it is crucial to keep your kitchen clean and sanitary to discourage pests from dwelling in your property.

Seal Any Holes, Cracks, Or Crevices: Another tip to prepare your home for deterring pests is to inspect your home structure. Look for any small holes, gaps, cracks, or crevices. You must especially pay attention to the patio and porch areas as well as the windows and doors. You have to know that cracks and holes can let pesky critters into your house; thus, you must seal them immediately. You can use a natural sealant to close these areas. For larger holds, you can consider using steel wool since this can keep pests, especially rodents out.

Use Natural Pest Repellents: When preventing pest infestation, the first thing that comes to mind is using chemical pest repellents, but these products may cause negative side effects. What you can do instead is use natural repellents that are very effective and safe. Here are a few of them:

  • Diatomaceous Earth: This is one of the most effective repellents and a very safe alternative. You can simply sprinkle this substance in areas where you usually find pests, such as roaches and ants. This substance will dehydrate the insects and bugs. Most of these pests are typically killed within two weeks after application.
  • Catnip: This repellent is very effective against roaches. It contains an active ingredient known as nepetalactone. This ingredient is harmless for humans and animals. To use catnip, you can leave small sachets of this substance in areas where roaches congregate. You can also make a spray out of this ingredient by simmering a small amount of catnip in water. Remember though to only use this solution when you do not have cats at home.
  • Lemon Spray: You can also create a lemon juice spray to clean surfaces and remove pheromones left behind by other insects.
  • Peppermint Oil: This natural oil can be used to repel ants, roaches, and bedbugs.

These are just a few tips for keeping unwanted guests out of your property. These tips are very practical, easy, and safe but they can go a long way for keeping your household pest-free.
