How to Protect Against Mortgage Assistance
There have been some problems with the government web site that was organized to offer mortgage assistance. A few people have reported that after contacting the site, they were in turn contacted by firms offering mortgage assistance. As it turned out they were scams making the situation even worse. These reports are unconfirmed and could have been the result of a number of things, but this is a great time to review and protect against mortgage assistance scams.
Before going any further with a firm offering home mortgage assistance make sure they are a reputable firm. Call the Better Business Bureau or contact the Bar Association to see if the firm is a reputable one. Then ask specific questions about the firm, such as a reference list from former customers, the banks they have worked with and how many deals have been made.
If you are moving forward with the firm, never give them a social security number of checking number until it is verified that the firm is legit.
Be vigilant when using an internet based firm. Call the firm and talk to a live person before doing anything else. Ask many questions about what they require, how they can help and do they have any references of past clients.
Refuse to exchange any money until the deal is done. Do not agree on a half now and half later, if the firm is demanding that walk away and find another firm.
Financial trouble can cloud thinking, but stay focused on the problem at hand and do not become a victim.
