How to Quit Your Job to Go For Your Dreams

By Edited May 26, 2016 2 2

There is a growing trend in today's society of working yourself into the grave. Society has trained us that we need to work constantly to achieve the things that it tells us that we need to be happy and then do it all again tomorrow. It is no wonder that most workers think about the idea of making the commitment to leave their job more times a day then they feel happy. I am sure you have wanted to quit your job every time the boss hands you some insane project to due. As you work through a task that has not positive aspects to it and try to get it done faster then the other guy, it is easy to see why you are not happy. You are not living for your dreams
The Reality
You remember dreams, don't you? Those were the images that you had of what you wanted your life to be before the cold harsh reality of society hit you. Many adults have long since abandoned the idea of having dreams about their lives. They have decided to settle for the path that life has given them. This is a tragedy and the reason that people complain of being depressed constantly. This is why you need to quit your job in order to reconnect to the dreams that you had about your life and what you wanted out of it.
Step One
Choose a date about 30 days from now that you will quit your job. If you really wanted to make a change and really go after your dreams then you are just going to need to do it. If you sit around and wait for the "right" time to quit your job, that time is never going to come. Your mind will always be able to come up with tons of excuses for why you should go after your dreams. Believe me when I say that none of them are valid. Evey excuse for why you can not just quit your job is fear creeping into your life's plan.
Step Two
Figure out what your dreams are for your life. If you have been settling for your entire life then it may be hard to figure out what you really dream of doing. This answer will be different for every person that walks this planet. Perhaps you want to quit your job to be able to start your own business. There will be others who dream of travelling the world. There is no right or wrong answers to what you want to do with your life. You are also not limited to one dream. You may truly want to quit your job to start a business that will allow you to travel the world just like the book The Four Hour Work Week. You can also revisit these dreams and change them as often as you want to.
Step Three
Calculate exactly what steps that you need to take in the next 30 days to make this dream a reality. One of the most important things about dreams is to give yourself an action plan to achieve. Being able to quit your job is just one step in the process of getting what you want out of life. When you are forced to think of things happening in small time frames like 30 days, you are forced to take action. This is why in step one, you give yourself 30 days to quit your job.
Step Four
If your dreams do not include starting a business or some other way to make money when you are going to quit your job, then you are going to figure out how you are going to keep paying the bills. There is a way of thinking about building residual income through a business or other sources that will allow you to make the money that you need to fund your adventures. This is an important way to be able to quit your job and not just end up in another one that you are going to hate six months down the line. There are many writers out there that blog and write articles about ways to build residual income. You can also read the book The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris to get a great look into how this all can be done.
Step Five
Surround yourself with like minded to help you on the journey to quit your job to follow your dreams. The unfortunate reality is that most people will tell you that you are insane when you tell them what you are up to. These people may be well meaning in their efforts to talk you out of the actions that you are planning to take. Listening to them, will only keep you in the unhappy life that you already have. If you do not have friends and family that will support you to quit your job, then you may want to find people to support you online. There are many forums that exist with people who are doing the same things that you are. If you do not believe me then just take a look at the Info Barrel forum on this site. There you will be able to find amazing support for the plans and dreams that you have in your life.
Step Six
Get off your chair and get to work. Just sitting there dreaming about being able to quit your job is not going to make you happy. Researching the business that you will create to finance your dreams is only one step in the process. Many people end up on a never ending carousel of researching and planning and forget that they need to get off at some point and get to work. Do not end up in this trap. Make yourself do at least one thing today to get your self moving toward being able to quit your job. You will be happier and join the group of people who go after what they want in life. Which is the best group to be in!

Step five is soooo important! Its so crucial to surround yourself with friends and family that believe in you and will not crush your dreams. You are right - most people will do everything they can to talk you out of it and you don't need that kind of negativity when you are trying to transform your life.

I really like this article. Like many people, I have gone back and forth about quitting my job many times. I am currently in a rut there, and think I am finally ready to take a leap of faith and do it.
