Heartgard is the leading brand of preventative heartworm medicine for dogs. You do not need to be locked into a RRP by purchasing such medication from your vet. There are several ways to save money on Heartgard for Dogs.

Saving money on heartworm medication need not put your pet at risk from the disease. There are several ways to pay less for exactly the same parasite control.

Firstly, look online. Your veterinary office only sells relatively small volumes of heartworm medicine. They will not get the best prices wholesale so cannot pass on the best retail prices to you. Also, they are unlikely to stock the entire range of heartworm medication available. In general the first few online pets medicine retailers you find during any google search, will offer you some level of discount Heartguard for dogs, when compared to your vets standard prices. But, they are usually not the cheapest places to buy. Always price-check any online quotes.

Secondly try generic heartworm medicine. There are several versions of generic Heartgard. They contain the same amount of the active ingredient (Ivermectin) which destroys heartworm larvae. They are usually at least 15% cheaper than Heartgard itself, but the only difference to the consumer is the packaging.

Thirdly use heartworm pills rather than chewables. By crushing a heartworm tablet yourself, into your pets food you can save another 15% or so. Buy Fido some cheap dog treats instead!

Fourthly, consider buying discount Heartgard for Dogs from a Canadian retailer. That way you can buy heartworm medicine without a prescription. This saves you a trip to the vets and payment for a prescription.
