How to Save Money with Police Auctions
If you are looking to buy a big ticket, money gobbling item, you can save money with local police auctions. Police and sheriff's departments auction off items that they have seized for a variety of reasons. Cars, televisions, computers, game systems and stereo systems are the most common items to be found but many others are also auctioned.
Contact your local police or sheriff department and ask them to direct you to the nearest police auction and find out when it will be held. In some areas of the country, departments are small enough that a few agencies may team up for auctions. In a case like this, you may have to drive to another county, city or town.
Determine what you are interested in buying. Research the items that will be up for auction, if there is a site where they are listed. Ask the police department if they have a list of items that will be auctioned, some will have a list available for the public. If not, do a little research on what the average going price is for the items you may want to buy. Cars are one of the biggest selling items at a police auction. Set a spending limit and stick to it.
Contact the police auction center and ask what you are required to bring. You will need at least two forms of identification. You will also be required to have cash on hand for any deposits. Debit cards, credit cards and checks are rarely, if ever accepted.
