How to Save Your Relationship

By Edited Nov 20, 2013 0 0

Your relationship is in shambles but you don't want to lose your significant other. You care for them deeply and you don't want to be without them. Fortunately, if you start now, you can save your relationship. All you need is to open up your mind, bring in a wealth of positivity, and be willing to work as a team.

Depending on the problems that you two are sharing, your relationship could be hanging on a thread for a variety of reasons. Also, depending on the problem, even though its hard to hear, sometimes you have to let the relationship go. For example, if one person in your relationship is caught cheating and they have cheated in the past, sometimes its best let the relationship end. The pain caused by cheating can be terrible and unless the cheater takes major steps to fix their problem, they will probably cheat again. On the other hand, if the relationship is having problems because one partner is distancing themselves from another, you can, with work, save your relationship.

The key with any relationship is developing a zone where both partners feel safe when with each other. Constant yelling, arguing, and negative talk can cause one partner to distance themselves from the other to get away from the negativity. In order to develop a zone of safety in a relationship, you need to help each other with positive, uplifting language. For example, if you have a husband who is glued to the television and seems to avoid you each and every day and he didn't used to, talk it out and find out why. You need to explain to them why you want his attention and that you don't want to lose him. Help each other discover that "this problem" or "that problem" isn't just one person's issue to fix, but a team effort. Remember, again, that optimism and positivity is key to developing a safe environment for a relationship to thrive.

A relationship is a team effort. If one person is unwilling or unable to work towards the success of the relationship, your relationship will fail. Marriage counseling and other forms of counseling are available for couples who want to succeed but don't know how. There are some amazing people and organizations out there whose number one goal is to see you two succeed.
