How to Season Wooden Kitchen Items
Seasoning wooden kitchen items will prolong their life when done properly. Seasoning wooden items like spoons, rolling pins, salad bowls, salad tongs and cutting boards is easy to do. Seasoning these items will prevent them from splintering and warping.
Things You Will Need
Paper towels
Mineral oil
Soft cloth
Cookie sheet
Tun foil
Fine sandpaper (optional)
Oven mits
Spread tin foil over the bottom rack in your oven. You don't want your wooden kitchen items to drip oil onto the bottom of the oven.
Turn your oven on at the lowest setting you can.
Sand any "rough" spots down so the various wooden kitchen items you are going to season are smooth. Wipe off with a damp cloth.
Pour a small amount of mineral oil onto a soft cloth that will not leave lint behind. Rub the oil into the wooden items. Be generous with the oil but don't put so much on that the item is dripping oil.
Place the wooden kitchen items on a cookie sheet as you oil them.
Place the cookie sheet in the oven and leave for 2 hours.
Turn the oven off and wait for an additional hour.
Carefully remove the cookie sheets from the oven.
With a clean, soft cloth, wipe off any excess mineral oil that is left. Lay everything on tin foil and allow to stay out overnight. Properly seasoning your items will prevent them from warping and splintering and prolong their lives by sealing out moisture and keeping them from drying out.
Repeat the process every six months, or as needed, to be sure to maintain the condition of the wooden kitchen items.

This is very interesting information. You wouldn't believe how many split wooden spoons I have. I'll have to give this a try the next time a buy more wood spoons!
