If you have a hobby or like to make things, why not turn your hobby into a way to make money from home? You’ve heard the saying: “Find what you like to do and find a way to make money with it.” Turning your hobby into a business gives you an opportunity to do what you enjoy while making money. However, before you start to make money from home, there are factors you need to consider.

Determine What You Would Like to Sell From Home to Make Money

Possible things that you can sell from home are paintings, crafts and refinished or painted furniture. Gift baskets and flower arrangements are other options. Natural products are other examples of things that you can sell from home to make money. Examples of natural products are candles, soaps and essential oils.

Get the Necessary Permits and Licenses to Make Money From Home

Requirements to sell things from home vary by state and municipality. Contact your City Hall to find out what your state’s requirements are regarding selling things from home.

If you live in a state that collects sales tax, you’ll need a Seller’s Permit. The permit confirms to your clients that you’re authorized to collect sales tax on each purchase. Selling without a permit is a Class B misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine of about $1,500 for the first offence. The fine amount increases with each subsequent offense and could include jail time.

Market Your Items and Make Money

  • Post your items on sites such as eBay, Amazon and Etsy. Place ads in local newspapers. Another option is to sell your items on consignment. You might make less because the store would keep a small percentage from each sale, but it's a way to increase your sales.
  • Local craft stores might also agree to sell your items for you, or they might want to buy the items outright. Either way, it would be an opportunity to make money from home. Farmer markets and fairs are other places where you can sell your items.
  • Another possibility is to set up a stand at the flea market. You can either sell the items yourself or pay someone to man the stand on weekends.
  • Approach the manager of a gas station or supermarket and offer to rent a corner of their parking lot on the weekends. Set up a tent and display your items. If you choose this option, look for a location where it’s convenient for customers to pull in and out of the parking lot. If it’s inconvenient, people driving by might hesitate to stop, and you‘ll lose customers. Also, make sure the location you choose has sufficient parking space.

Accurate Records and Making Money From Home

It’s important to keeping accurate records when you sell things to make money from home. If you collect sales tax, you’ll need to submit a quarterly report along with the sales taxes you collected during that quarter. You will also rely on your records to file you income tax return. If you want to benefit from any business deductions, you’ll need to have accurate records in case you’re ever audited. It’s a good idea to schedule time regularly to record receipts and file papers.

Selling things is an ideal way to make money from home. However, it’s important to make sure that you have the necessary permits and licenses. Work from home is generally demanding and time consuming, but it also offers many rewards. You can set your own schedule and spend more time with your family. If you like to create things, why not turn your creativity into a stream of income? Do what you enjoy doing while making money from home.
