Suppose you are at work and need to discreetly send a text message. Maybe your wireless service charges you a fortune to transmit a measly five-word text message. Or, perhaps, like me, you just aren't very good at typing on your cell phone. These common problems have a common solution: You can send text messages online. It's fast, it's easy, and here's something you don't hear very often connected to cell phones: it's free.
Things You Will NeedComputer
Open your email program or website.
Step 2Find the mobile phone number of the person you want to send a text message online to. You will also need to know which cell phone service she uses.
Step 3Locate the To field in your email editor where you normally put in email addresses. Input the 10-digit phone number of the person to whom you want to send a text message. Do not put in any spaces, dashes or parenthesis. What you should have so far should look this: 5551231234
Step 4Put an @ sign after the phone number, just as you would in a normal email message. What you put after the @ sign will vary depending on the service of the person to whom you want to send the text message.
Step 5Use vtext.com for Verizon customers. So, the complete address would look like this: firstname.lastname@example.org . For T-mobile customers, use tmomail.net. For AT&T customers, use txt.att.net. For cricket customers, use sms.mycricket.com.
Step 6Type a subject in the subject field if you wish. No, text messages don't usually have subjects, but when you send a text message online through email, you have that option. The subject will appear, in parenthesis, as the first line in your text message.
Step 7Type your text message in the body of the email. Keep in mind, character limits will still apply to your online text message, so keep it short.
Step 8Hit send to send to send the text message online. The recipient will receive your text message just as if you had sent it from your phone. He will see it came from your email address. If he replies to your online text message, you will receive the reply in your inbox.
Step 9Reply to a return text message, by simply hitting reply and typing your text message. When you send text messages online through email, you can have an ongoing dialogue, just as you would using your phone.
