Attempting to fall asleep around someone who consistently snores is no easy task.  It's even harder if one is a light sleeper and is woken up relatively easily.  In my personal experience, getting in a decent night's sleep is next to impossible with a significant other loudly snoring throughout the night. It's important not be overly critical or judgmental of a snorer, it's not exactly within their control.

Many underestimate the toll it takes on both partner's sleep cycles and usually adversely affects their overall health and creates bad tension within the relationship. Snoring may also be a small symptom of a greater underlying breathing condition, such as obstructive sleep apnea. Here are five ways to cope with sleeping with or around someone who snores.

#1 Snoring Worsens with Sleeping Positions

Sooner or later, everyone discovers this little gem in soothing a snorer. A vast majority of people who snore, do it more often and much worse when they're laying on their backs. This is not an actual solution to the problem, it's more of a short term relief from the snoring, giving a small window of time to fall asleep. The average person will adjust their sleeping position many times throughout the night and will ultimately end up on their back again. This works for mild cases of snoring, but will not be enough for the more severe cases.

#2 Foam Earplugs to Block Snoring

Many have success using reusable foam earplugs, which essentially lessens the disruption from loud snoring. It's advisable to buy quality earplugs that will mold itself to the user's ear canal, for a effective, yet comfortable fit. When used properly, these simple, cost effective earplugs will  help ease tensions by allowing both partners to get more deep, uninterrupted sleep. Be careful if you insist on creating your own, it can possibly be harmful, as well as less effective.  Some use cotton balls, but the fibers can easily tear and work their way deep into the ear canal, safer to stick to memory foam-like earplugs.

#3 Utilizing Sleep Aides

Using sleep aides, such as over the counter, non prescription drugs like an antihistamine or melatonin can make a huge difference.  Sleeping with a snorer is at it's most truculent when it hinders ones ability to fall asleep gradually. #4 Using White Noise to Dampen Snoring

One of the most effective tools used to negate the sleeplessness associated with snoring is to use white noise to drown it out. You may have seen or heard people using a television for their source of background noise, which might work, but isn't particularly healthy or cost effective. Leaving the TV on can add to the difficulties of falling asleep, due to the sounds and shifting lights that are given off, a fan is a much better alternative to combat snoring. It may definitely be worth investing in a natural white noise machine.

#5 Sleeping Separately

Possibly the only surefire remedy for losing sleep due to a snorer, is to sleep separately. One of the many perks of being in a committed relationship, is having someone to cuddle and slumber with--but if you're both losing sleep over a snoring routine, it's time to get more realistic, and accept a more logical solution.  To this very day, my girlfriend still snores like a freight train, unfortunately.

However, we both agreed to sleep separately, and things are much more smooth between us, with a lot less friction. We both enjoy longer and deeper sleep cycles, which makes us less prone to be irritable with one another. Good sleep is essential for good health, without it things can go from bad to worse, very quickly.
