How to Start Studying

Learning how to start studying is one of the most important skills a child, teenager, or adult can learn.  The sooner it is learned the better since life is full of tests.  Children, teenagers, and young adults generally take tests on a regular basis in school and college but tests can continue even after college.  Many of us will take tests to obtain a driver’s license, earn a professional credential, obtain a job, or be admitted into a graduate school program.  Learning how to start studying for a test will increase performance on exams, which will likely lead to more success and satisfaction in life.

There is no right or wrong way to study that applies to everyone.  Instead, people must experiment with different study techniques to see what works best for them.  Below are a few suggestions that may be of help to you as you study for tests.

Ways to Study

Find out what the exam will be on, how it will be graded, its format, and how important it is to your final grade or objective.  The more details you know about the test the better you will be able to prepare for it.

Establish a regular studying schedule in order to get through all of the material and do not deviate.  Take a break every hour or so while studying to keep yourself from getting burned out.  Find a time when you can study free of distractions and stick to it.  2 hours a day is much better than 12 hours on a Saturday to make up for not studying the rest of the week.  Marathon cram sessions are a recipe for disaster if consistently relied upon.   

Try using Noise Cancelling Headphones or ear plugs while studying to drown out potentially distracting noise.  Ear plugs work for some people, but many people find them uncomfortable.  While Noise Cancelling Headphones are more expensive than ear plugs, most people find them much more comfortable and more effective at drowning out noise.  One of the most highly effective yet economical options is the JVC HANC250 Noise Cancelling Headphones.  These also come in handy when you are trying to sleep in a noisy environment, such as on an airplane or subway.

Use different study aids, such as flash cards to help you learn the information.  Flash cards are great because they are much easier to carry around than a book and can be easily pulled out during a break, while riding public transportation, etc.  Make sure that you have enough time to actually study the flash cards after spending the time to create them. 
Get help from a teacher or tutor early on if you require assistance in learning the material.  Don’t wait until the last minute, as they may be unavailable to assist you.  Also consider forming a study group for help, support, and encouragement if you learn well in a group setting.

Experiment with the above study strategies to figure out what works for you and then stick with it.  There are a lot of great books available on Amazon that shed additional light on this subject, such as “Study Smarter, Not Harder.”  You might try reading one or more of these for additional insights.  You also might be surprised by the benefit your children and teenagers would get from reading such a book.  It is one thing for a parent to tell their children to study harder or better, but another thing for a skilled expert on the subject to open their eyes through examples, research, and success stories.  I sincerely hope that these tips will be of assistance to you as you learn how to study for tests.
