If the only thing stopping you from starting your own business is the lack capital, you are not alone. Many successful entrepreneurs were at first rejected by banks or investors because they did seem like a high risk, and had to bootstrap their business with barely any money. Learning how to start a business with little money can help you reach the point where your home business can generate enough revenue to pay for itself.

Examples of Businesses That Can Start With Little Money

In most cases, for a business idea to be viable without any sort of capital it requires either little to no equipment, not having to purchase products in advance or being able to conduct it from home without having to rent business premises. Some ways to make money fast and easy that don’t necessarily require upfront capital are:

  • Online writing
  • Freelancing as a web designer or developer
  • Consultancy
  • Personal training
  • Virtual assistants

This doesn’t mean that those businesses are not a risk at all, but provided the entrepreneur has the required skills and is willing to learn additional ones they can be very successful businesses to start with little money.

Things That Money Could Buy, But You’ll Have to Do Yourself

If you want to start a business with little money expect having to do a lot of things by yourself. For example, most entrepreneurs are usually well learned in marketing, be it by trade or out of necessity, as they cannot afford to pay somebody else to develop their marketing campaign and take care of it. This means that if you want to start a business with little money you’ll be wearing many other hats alongside your core business activity. This can be an incredibly enriching experience and make you a better professional, but it can also be the source of overworking and stress. Be careful about taking on more than you can handle, working too long hours every day will take its toll on your health and being sick means your business won’t be able to operate.

Learning When It’s Time to Delegate

It’s also important to learn when you should delegate, even if it costs you money initially. For example, while technically anybody can create their own website, the end result will be very different if you are a professional web designer or not. In some cases, investing on a professionally developed website or professional photography of your stock may be very well worth it, especially if you know you are totally unfamiliar with the subject. Another area that is often worth outsourcing is accounting and any sort of legal matters associated with your business, unless you are a trained professional. Missing a tax deadline or getting a 4 day inspection because you did the paperwork wrong can mean fines in excess of what you would have paid to an accountant. Just remember to make sure you keep the bills so you can claim them as self employment expenses.

Saving Money When Outsourcing

When people say outsourcing, they often mean sending work to somebody in a different country for a much cheaper price, but that often means you are sacrificing quality. You don’t always need to find the cheapest provider to get things done for little to no money. You could consider trading your services for those you need, or just asking nicely your family and friends for help. Some tasks that are time consuming can be easily outsourced, freeing more time for you to dedicate yourself to more profitable and difficult tasks. Find a dynamic team you are comfortable working with, and don’t hesitate to delegate when you know it will be best for your bottom line to dedicate yourself to other tasks.

Yes - it sounds like there are a lot of options for businesses that you can start with very little money. The net has been a great equalizer that way. But - any business requires the investment of time and some financial resources. Good tips on low overhead things you can do.

I agree with you there are heaps of businesses that you can start from home that cost very little at all. Plus when you do have to buy things they are all tax deductible anyway. I did resumes and word processing for a while and some bookkeeping. These just take a descent computer and printer and use the normal Word processing package to do the book work on.
