How to Start a Paleo Diet

By Edited Aug 24, 2016 0 0

The Paleo Diet started in the 1970's when Walter L. Voegtlin, a gastroenterologist, published a book called "The Stone Age Diet." Voegtlin had a host of digestive disorders and was able to heal himself of these problems with diet. The diet helps heal health problems while helping you drop pounds. People on the Paleo Diet have noticed a decrease in blood pressure and increase in weight loss. The diet is helps get rid of diseases that have only been known by modern man like cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, and osteoporosis. Let's look at what you need to do to start this diet.

Avoid foods that weren't eaten by Paleolithic man. This includes many foods we eat now. Don't eat grains like rice, barley, wheat, and rye. Avoid potatoes, beans, dairy products,  sugar, and vegetable oils. Grains, potatoes and beans contain toxins that were avoided by early many. Cooking processes help neutralize some of these toxins, but not all. Early humans didn't comsume milk from other animals so dairy must be avoided. Foods like  sugar and vegetable oils require refining processes that weren't available to early humans.

Eat nuts. Nuts are high in protein and essential fats. All nuts are good on this diet, except peanuts and cashews which aren't really nuts at all. They're beans.

Eat plenty of vegetables. Including a variety of vegetables in your meals will help fill you up and give you the vitamins and minerals you need.

Eat fresh fruit. Fruit is nutritious and provides you of many antioxidants. Try to eat more vegetables than fruit. Fruit is natural and delicious, but it still contains sugar. Focus your eating more on vegetables.

Eat meat. On the Paleo Diet, you can eat fish, beef, lamb, poultry, and pork. Make sure that all the meat you consume is free-range organic and the fish is wild caught. Free-range organic meat contains more essential fats. They also don't contain antibiotics and hormones that affect your health and would never be eaten by Paleolithic man.

Eat eggs. You can consume eggs on the Paleo Diet, but like the meat, you need to make sure you're eating eggs laid by free range organic chickens.

Use these oils. Coconut oil is a tropical oil that has antibacterial properties. This is an acceptable oil to use on this diet. Olive oil can also be used to make salad dressings, but shouldn't be used for cooking.

Eat raw food. Eat many of your vegetables raw. Early humans had limited use of fire for cooking.

Slow cook foods. When you do cook foods try slowing cooking most of the time. Cooking your meats and vegetables slowly in a crock pot will help keep the nutrients intact.

Be creative. Don't think that your diet will be a bore just because you've had to cut a few things out. You can still have delicious meals. You can even use vegetable substitutes for grains you may miss in your diet. Spiralize raw zucchini as a substitute for pasta. Grate cauliflower as a substitute for rice. If you need more meal ideas buy a Paleo cookbook. They are full of delicious recipe ideas that will help you stay on your new diet.
