Craigslist is great because it offers you a good sampling of the type of work that is in demand and will give you an opportunity to start building a portfolio and gaining experience. I am going to outline below the first steps you can take right away to get started.
Things You Will NeedThe two things you will need to start are (1) a computer and (2) a useful set of skills. You might not know what the skill set is yet, but we will Craigslist to figure it out.
Step 1First of all, you should go to Craigslist and go to the "Gigs" section. This is a great resource because you can see exactly what people are looking for and willing to pay for. Browse around this section and see if there are any tasks that are you capable of doing well. Once you find one, you can start focusing on finding clients.
Step 2Now that you have identified a potential set of gigs (for example, maybe you can tutor people), you can go ahead and contact the posters and tell them you can help. I have found the most effective contact emails demonstrate that you are already capable of doing the required task. Maybe you can send sample work or you can describe your past experience. There is a lot of competition for gigs, so you should send out a few emails at a time.
Step 3So, you've identified some gigs on your local Craigslist page. Lets say, however, there aren't many gigs and you are offering a service that can be done remotely (document editing, software coding, etc.). If this is the case, you should go to a site like Craiglook. This site will allow you to search for gigs on all of the different Craigslist sites, meaning you will have much bigger potential client base.
Step 4Hopefully, at this point you have gotten responses to a couple of your emails and have found some tasks to work on. Now, its time to be even more proactive. You should sign up for Craigslist and post a listing advertising the service you are offering.
I've outlined above an outline of how to start making money on Craigslist today. You will need to do a little work to get started, but you will find that you can very quickly find interesting work and make money. Please let me know if you have any tips or suggestions!
