Is acne-free skin on top of your list of New Year's resolution? Luckily, in most cases, acne-free skin is not expensive or difficult to achieve with a clean skin regime and topical creams available over the counter.

The first major step to getting cleaner skin is creating your basic regime. This regime must be done consistently after waking up and before going to bed to achieve significant results. Your regime should include three products.

  1. Gentle cleanser - Pimples are formed from pores on the surface on the skin become clogged. A gentle cleanser can clean the skin of impurities, but an overly aggressive cleanser can irritate the skin and strip it of its protective layer. Avoid using anything with scrubbing beads or acne medication, yet. Several good options are Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, Purpose Gentle Cleansing Wash, or Clean & Clear Oil-Free Foaming Facial Cleanser.
  2. Treatment - After cleaning your face, apply treatment gently onto the face giving it time to absorb into the skin. Look for treatments with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Go to your dermatologist to try prescription strength treatment options such as Retin-A. To start try benzoyl peroxide treatments such as the DDF Benzoyl Peroxide Gel. Regular applications of Retin-A at night and benzoyl peroxide in the morning have cleared my skin in one month.
  3. Moisturizer with SPF - Even with oily skin, you'll want to moisturizer to regulate your skin's oil production. Most acne treatments will make your skin more prone to skin damage. Find a moisturizer that is oil-free and non-comedogenic. I use Clean & Clear Finishes Pore Perfecting Moisturizer for a clean matte finish that moisturizes without leaving my face looking greasy.

Finding a regime that works for you may take a little bit of trial-and-error. Some people can be allergic to benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. has a step-by-step process of their favorite regime and products with message boards and ratings of most commercially available products.

Consistency is the key to getting clear skin. Be sure to wash morning and afternoon for at least two months before trying a new regime. Keeping your New Year's resolution may be the motivation you need to develop a routine that will cure your acne.
