Making the decision to stop drinking is one of the healthiest decisions you can make for yourself. If you are someone that drinks lightly, moderately, or heavily everyday then you are in the category of an alcoholic. Some people begin drinking socially, and it gradually progresses to drinking everyday, or drinking alone because they want to get a buzz, or because they have become so accustomed to drinking. When deciding to eliminate alcohol from your life, you should understand that it is going to be a hard thing to do, so you must have a strong will and know that it is going to be difficult. Drinking can cause many problems in your life such as violence and problems with your health.

People use many different steps to help them with the process of quitting drinking. Writing a list of reasons why you are stopping drinking can help because every day you can look at that list and remember why it is that you are trying to stop. There are of course many ways to stop drinking. If you have real friends, they will help you through this process until you are able to not drink one drop of alcohol. If you are someone who drinks chronically you might want to start off by lessening your drinking day by day. If you drink a six-pack or more a day, try first to begin drinking three beers a day, and then two, then one, then you can space out your days until you are drinking once a week. By this time you will begin realizing that you don't need alcohol and that you can live without it. If you are not seriously addicted to begin with then you might be able to stop drinking alcohol this way. Otherwise, you may need to ask for help.

Finding a partner that wants to stop drinking and is serious about it can help to. If you have friends that drink around you then you should consider finding different friends to hang around with at this time. If you try many techniques on your own yet continue to fail there are many other treatment options to consider. There are group meetings that you can attend called Alcohol Anonymous (AA) meetings. You can also consult your doctor for various treatments as well. A pill called Antibuse is another route you can try, talk to your doctor about it and get the facts before trying this pill on your own.
