How to Take a Leave of Absence from Work and Still Have a Job

By Edited Aug 24, 2016 1 2

There are many things that can come up in life expectantly and cause you to need to take a leave of absence from work. Many of these monumental things usually have to do with health issues and or the family. People are often cringe at the idea of having to walk away from a job for any length of time for fear that it may not be there when they can come back. Now whether you will still be employed after you have taken a leave of absence from work all has to do with how you go about going through the process. As with every thing in life their is right and a wrong way to do this in regards to making sure that you have a job to come back to.
-
Step One
-
Let your employer know what is going on in your life before it results in you needing to take a leave of absence from work. This does not mean that you need to tell your boss about every little thing that is going on in your life. This will bore and ultimately irritate them to no end. What this means is that if a big problem is developing in your life that may require you to take time off, then it is good to mention it to your boss. For example if your mother is not doing well, this is something that you may want to mention. This way if her health gets worse and you need to take a leave of absence from work then your boss had some type of warning in advance.
-
Step Two
-
When you tell your employer that you need to take a leave of absence from work, try to give a time frame when you believe that you will be able to return. This may not always be possible. If you can give your boss some idea when you will be coming back then they will know that you are serious about your career no matter what is going on in your life.
-
Step Three
-
Through out your leave of absence from work, call and give your boss an update of the situation and if a possible return date is in the foreseeable future. By staying in touch, you are showing the employer that you truly do want to work for them. This will tell them that it is important for you to come back to work with them and that they should keep your job waiting for you. It is all about communication if you want to have a job to come back to when you need to take a leave of absence from work.

It's okay to take a leave from work if it's necessary and reasonable; it's the employee's right to do so anyway. Just make sure to inform the employer about it and submit any requirements that may be necessary.
