How to Turn On and Off Your Christmas Tree Lights with Your Smartphone or Computer

By Edited Jun 27, 2016 0 0
It's easy to control the Xmas tree lights with a smartphone

You can use your smartphone or computer to turn the Christmas tree lights on and off. And it's easier to do than you might think. You can do this job in a few hours, once you have the required hardware, and then impress everyone. Using a phone to turn the Xmas tree lights on never gets old!

First, you have to understand that there is no special iPhone or Android app that can magically control your lights. A smartphone app can talk to a control network, which in turn can manage the lighting. So, you will set up a control network, then attach the Christmas tree lights to that system, and finally use your phone or computer to send commands to the network.

In fact, your control network automates Christmas tree lights, but it can do a range of other automation tasks, such as controlling all lights around the house, controlling the heat and cooling, and telling appliances, including sprinklers, door locks and much more, to open/close or start/stop at a given time.

Things You Will Need

You will need to spend about $200-$250 to set up a control network. One control network that is very easy to install is the the Insteon SmartLinc. For this, you will need:

- the Smarthome 2412N SmartLinc INSTEON Central Controller
- 2 Smarthome 2443 Access Point INSTEON Wireless Phase Couplers, and
- the Smarthome Insteon Lamplinc V2

The first step is to establish a home control network. Plug the SmartLinc controller into an electrical outlet, and attach it to your home router (or wireless network hub). The SmartLinc will walk you through an online setup wizard.

Next, go to your Christmas tree and plug the tree lights into a device called the Insteon LampLinc. You will also wirelessly link this device to your control network, which takes a few minutes of following some simple instructions provided with the product.

At this point, all you need to do is go to the SmartLinc web page that you had used to configure your home control network. This will allow you to turn lights on and off with the push of a button.

This is a great feature that, along with other smart home solutions, can make your life a lot easier.

Tips & Warnings

You need to have a wireless network already set up for this to work.

Look for iPhone or Android apps which can control a SmartLinc network. These are easier to use than the SmartLinc page, which you access through your phone or computer's browser.
