How to Use Bananas in the Garden and in Compost

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Bananas can be used in the garden as a fertilizer, mulch and in compost. When striving for a green, or organic garden, items that may typically be throw away can help to fill a need. Kitchen refuse often comes in handy. Here are a few ways to recycle overripe bananas and banana skins.

Bananas and banana skins are high in potassium and also contain phosphorous. Add bananas to the compost bin, pile or heap to raise potassium and phosphorous levels in the compost.

Bury bananas a few inches under the soil near flowers while being careful not to disrupt the roots. You will have more blooms. Bananas and their skins will also help to deter aphids when buried just under the soil around roses.

Puree bananas and banana skins with some water and use as a fertilizer throughout the garden. Lightly work into the soil and barely cover the organic fertilizing mixture.

Grind dried banana peels to use as an organic mulch around the flowers.

Leave bananas in their peels and poke holes through the peel. Place bananas in the garden to attract butterflies and bees necessary for pollination. Be sure to dig the bananas into the ground after night fall and when no bees are present so you don't have racoons and other unwelcome visitors appear.

By following these tips on using what would otherwise be thrown away, the garden, environment and your wallet will benefit.
