How to Use Beets in Companion Planting and in Compost

By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Beets can be used in companion planting, composting and in your meal planning. Companion planting is a technique in which plants are planted near each other so they benefit from each other in some way. If you want an organic gardening, start by using beets in companion planting and composting.

Things You Will Need

Beet seeds
Garden gloves
Garden spade
Garden hose

Plant beets near lettuce, kohlrabi, onion, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower to help with pest control. They will also add minerals to the soil that these other vegetables need.

Plant garlic near them to improve their growth and flavor.

Catnip and other mints also improve the overall health of this vegetable and attract beneficial insects. Control the mint so it doesn't choke out the beets and you'll see the benefits when you harvest. You can sink a container into the ground to keep the mint from spreading.

Keep them away from both runner and pole beans because these vegetables will stunt each other's growth and production. Don't plant beans or beets wherever the other crop was grown the previous year.

Add the leaves of this companion plant to your compost after you have finished harvesting and cleaning them. The leaves from beets are made up of as much as 25% magnesium! They will also add to the green material content of your compost pile or bin. The vegetable itself can also be added, just make sure to crush (or shred) it for a faster decomposition rate.
