Chili peppers play a surprising role in companion planting. While they have much in common with other peppers, they benefit in organic gardening by addressing issues in the soil also.

Things You Will Need

  • Chili peppers
  • Garden gloves
  • Garden hose
  • Garden spade

Step 1 Plant chili peppers close to each other, green peppers, okra or tomatoes to protect chilis from too much harsh sun exposure that will lead to the peppers drying and cracking. Planting these companion plant vegetables close together will also increase the humidity levels amongst the plants.
Step 2 In the organic garden, plant chili peppers near eggplant, cucumber, tomato, Swiss chard, okra and squash to prevent root rot. The roots of chili pepper help prevent root rot in the areas they were planted in for up to two years.
Step 3 Plant basil, oregano, parsley and rosemary as a companion plant to chili peppers to act as an organic living mulch. Chili peppers like high humidity and these companion plant herbs will assist in keeping the soil moist and overall humidity level around chili peppers at a higher level.
Step 4 Plant chili peppers away from beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts and fennel. These plants do not make good companion plants to each other in the home organic gardening plan.
Step 5 Plant geraniums, petunias, lovage, carrots and onions with chili peppers. These plants make good companion plants to chili peppers because they deter many pests and it will save space in the garden. These plants that are good companions for chili peppers will also help to raise the humidity levels around the peppers. The variations of foliage and colors often set a stunning display in the beds.
