By | 0 Comments | Rating: 0 | |

Corn plays a role in companion planting that shouldn't be overlooked. Companion planting is a technique in which plants are either planted in close proximity to each other, or kept away from each other. This way of organic gardening ensures plants mutually benefit each other or one plant benefits from the other. Corn is among the vegetables that play a part in companion planting. Corn both benefits from and is beneficial to a variety of plants. Grow this garden vegetable i an area that receives full sun. They are heavy feeders so make sure the soil is rich with organic matter and well-draining. They prefer soils with pH levels ranging from 6.0 to 6.8.

Things You Will Need

Corn
Garden gloves
Garden hose
Garden spade

Plant corn to serve as a trellis for green beans, peas and cucumbers.

It also serves to shade spinach and lettuces to prevent sun scald and to prolong their growing season. The same holds true for Amaranth.

Plant it with green beans and peas. It is a very heavy feeder and the beans or peas will fix nitrogen into the soil.

Plant Pig Thistle nearby as the long roots of this plant force nutrients towards the soils surface and the plants' root systems.

Plant Geraniums, Morning Glories, Lamb's Quarter and Amaranth around the base of these garden vegetables to deter pests, attract beneficial insects that feed of pests and to act as a living mulch. Winter squash, pumpkins and melons also help to deter pests.

Plant corn away from both celery and tomatoes as it will stunt their growth, productivity and attract pests to these plants.
