Eggplant plays a role in organic gardening when it is used in companion planting. Not only does eggplant benefit from the proximity of some plants, but it also benefits a variety of other plants. If you are interested in achieving an organic garden, companion planting is a must.

Things You Will Need

  • Eggplant
  • Garden gloves
  • Garden hose
  • Garden Spade

Step 1 Plant eggplant with marigolds, geraniums, petunias, nasturtium and chrysanthemums to benefit from these flowers' pest deterring qualities. These companion plants also attract beneficial insects that feed off of garden pests. This will also add a pop of interesting color to the organic garden.
Step 2 Plant eggplant with companion plants such as onion, garlic, leeks, peppers and peas. Eggplant will benefit from these plants on its growth and productivity. Plant as a companion to spinach, the eggplant will provide shade for spinach to prolong the growing season.
Step 3 Plant eggplant with herbs. Herbs are the powerhouse of companion plants in an organic garden. Eggplant benefits from the pest deterring qualities of mints, oregano, basil, summer savory and chives. Borage, summer savory and lovage all increase the productivity and flavor of eggplant.
Step 4 Do not plant eggplant near beans, cabbage, cauliflower, corn, broccoli or Brussels sprouts. These vegetables will interfere with each other's overall health. Dill and fennel also attract insects harmful to eggplant and should not be planted nearby.

Spend a little extra time planning out the organic garden so you can use eggplant in an interesting way as a companion plant.
