How to Use Green Beans in Companion Planting
Green beans have their place in companion planting as well as in the kitchen. They are one of the all time power-houses in using companion planting and crop rotation. They need full sun, an inch of water each week and well-draining soil. Whether you grow bush or pole varieties, they prefer the pH level of the soil to range between 6.0 and 6.5. However, there are some varieties that tolerate levels as low as 5.8.
Things You Will Need
Green Bean seeds
Garden spade
Garden gloves
Plant green beans throughout the vegetable, herb and flower garden. Green beans help the growth of most vegetables and herbs because their roots are host to bacteria that fix nitrogen in the soil. Examples of plants helped by green beans are corn, spinach, chard, peas, lettuce eggplant, rosemary, potatoes, celery, dill, carrots, strawberries, cucumbers, and many others.
Plant eggplant near them to benefit both plants. Eggplant helps the commonj garden vegetable's growth and production. Planting eggplant near them also repels the bean beetles that will quickly devastate an entire row.
These companion plants will also deter California beetles from the plants they target.
Keep them away from plants that do not like excesses of nitrogen like tomatoes, green peppers, chili peppers, kale, kohlrabi and sunflowers.
Keep these nitrogen affixing powerhouses away from beets, chives, onions and garlic or the bean plants will be stunted and yield poor results.
Plant green beans in an area where extra nitrogen is needed in the soil so you can rotate a heavy feeding crop (like corn) into the area the following year.
