How to Use Green Peppers in Companion Planting

By | 3 Comments | Rating: 2 | |

In the organic home garden, green peppers are one of the easiest to use in a companion planting scheme. They need full sun but have to be protected from too much sun. They thrive in rich, loamy, well-draining soils with a pH level ranging from 6.0 to 6.8. Under the right conditions, they will tolerate pH levels as low as 5.5.

Things You Will Need

Green Peppers
Garden gloves
Garden spade
Garden hose

Plant green peppers close to each other or along with tomatoes as a companion plant. They prefer high humidity and the peppers need some protection from getting burned by the sun. All plants go through a process called transpiration-they give off water vapor. An abundance of leaves helps keep this vapor from evaporating quickly.

Plant marjoram, basil, parsley and lovage with them to act as a living mulch to increase soil moisture and humidity. These herbs are also good companion plants in the organic garden due to their ability to deter pests.

Plant carrots and onions with them as these vegetables will also aid in deterring pests, attracting beneficial insects and save space in the organic garden.

Geraniums and petunias make good companion plants for this common garden vegetable plant also due to their pest deterring habits.

Plant green beans, kale, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and fennel away from green peppers as they are harmful to the peppers in companion planting.
