By | Aug 31, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Companion planting is a technique in which plants are planted near each other so they can either benefit from or benefit the other plant. If you are striving for an organic garden, companion planting will be very helpful in reaching that goal. Rosemary is a wonderfully aromatic herb that is easily used in companion planting.

Organic Gardening literature

Rosemary prefers a well drained, acidic, sandy soil. Decide which plants you want to benefit from it and plan your garden accordingly. Cross reference sunlight, watering and fertilizing requirements of the selected companion plant or plants.

This herb assists in keeping pests away from vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, beans, carrots, mustard, kohlrabi and cauliflower. It deters pests such as bean beetle, cabbage fly, bean parasites and carrot fly. Plant it near Sage as they are good companion plants for each other in the organic garden. It assists in the growth of Sage, which in turn assists the Rosemary.

The growth of it is assisted by planting Lovage or Sage nearby. Cross reference Lovage and Sage to be sure they don't have a negative impact on the plants you have chosen to plant Rosemary near in the organic garden.

Rosemary should not be planted near tomatoes. It will stunt the growth of tomato plants. This herb can get relatively tall if you let it, so be sure it won't interfere with sunlight requirements of any other plants that it is near.
