Tanning lotion is an excellent alternative to tanning in the sun because you are not damaging your skin in the sun’s harmful rays, but how do we keep our color looking natural, fresh, and new-looking? You don’t have to put in a lot of work to keep that sun-kissed glow. This article will show you how to best use sunless tanning lotions to get nonstop color that doesn’t fade, without having to work for it every day. It’s all in the method!

Things You Will Need

You will need: your favorite self tanning lotion, regular moisturizer, and an exfoliating facial buffing sponge (optional).

Step 1 Choose the right tanning lotion. If you want to get the most color for your money, go with the regular sunless tanner instead of the gradual tanners, or moisturizer containing bronzers. They are okay, but do take a long time, at least a week, to build up color and will fade quickly if you miss a day. Even if you are fair skinned, try the “deep” color. They really are not that dark, unless you use multiple applications. Unless you have sensitive skin, you will probably not need a separate facial tanning lotion. You can use the same one you use for your body, just make sure to blend well and avoid eyebrows and the hair around your hairline.
Step 2

Exfoliate your skin. You need to exfoliate your skin first because sunless tanning lotions work by coloring the top-most layers of your skin. As your skin naturally sheds, so does your color. By removing as much dead skin as possible before you begin you can make the color last longer because you are coloring younger skin.

Exfoliate your skin when you’re in the shower or when you normally wash your face every day. Shaving will naturally exfoliate your legs in order to prep it for the tanning lotion. As for your face or the rest of your body, you can either use a washcloth or a buffing sponge, such as a Buf-Puf which can be found online or in your grocery store who might carry a store brand.
Step 3 Apply regular moisturizer to dry areas before applying sunless tanning lotion. After your shower, concentrate on places like your feet, heels, elbows, and knees. Anywhere that is naturally “thick” skinned is a place to pay attention to. These thicker-skinned areas will pick up and show more color than smoother-skinned places such as along the length of your legs. By pre-moisturizing these dense areas, we can help them to pick up less color to prevent them from becoming darker than the rest of your skin.
Step 4

Apply your sunless tanning lotion, after your shower at least two or three times a week. The key to this minimal effort method is to use your tanning lotion along with your regular moisturizer, incorporating it into your regular bath or shower routine. Once you have the base-color going it will be very easy to apply a light layer of tanning lotion after each bath, and you will not have to go through a huge procedure over putting on the right amount or making sure you are completely covered again. All you are doing is touching up to keep the color from fading. You will not have to clear a chunk of time in your schedule to go through the entire process anymore, because you are now keeping up your color as part of your normal habits.

Simply apply lotion and make sure you rub it in well to avoid streaks. You don’t have to worry too much about how much you are using as long as it is blended and rubbed in. Use a little more the first time you color using sparingly over heels, elbows, and knees. For subsequent applications, use about the same amount of sunless tanner as you would your regular moisturizer.

This easy method will keep you consistently well self-tanned, without even thinking about the next time you need to apply your sunless tanning lotion!

Tips & Warnings

- Experiment with different sunless tanning lotion brands until you find one that you like, or look online to see what the best rated tanning lotions are.

-Completely rubbing the lotion into your skin and blending will go a long way to avoid streaks. Give yourself a once-over in the mirror before finishing to double check that you have done so.

-Don’t waste tanning lotion by completely covering every inch of your body. Color just what other people will see. For example, in the winter you will most likely be wearing pants and a shirt, not a bathing suit so just color your face, arms, chest, and your legs if you like. No sense in doing extra work.
