Finally we can call anyone in the US from anywhere in the world for free. Yes you heard that right it is free and the best thing about it is that it is easy to set up and you do not have to buy additional hardware. You do not have to buy Magic Jack or any other hardware because you only need your computer (PC or Mac) to call. Although you need to have a microphone and a speaker attached to your PC but if you have a laptop it should have a built-in microphone and speaker already.
This is a step by step guide in helping you get started in calling anywhere in the US for free.
Step 1. Log in to your Gmail account if you still do not have a Gmail account, do not worry because it is free and you can just type in your browser gmail.com and you will then sign up. It will take you about a minute to do so.
Once you sign in, you will be taken to your email account.
Step 2. On the left side of your email account, there is a chat link that looks like this:
Check if you have a text that says, Call Phone. If this is your first time to log in to Google Voice Chat the green phone icon above should be grayed out.
You need to install a plug-in so you need to click Call Phone and you will be taken to a wizard (step by step process) to install a Google Plug in for Google Voice Chat.
Before installing the plug-in make sure that your PC or Mac meets the following requirements:
- If you have a PC must be running on Windows XP or later
- If you have a Mac, it must run on Intel Mac OS X 10.4 or later
- If you have a Linux, any version will do.
When you install the plug in it should look like this:
After Google installs the plug-in it should prompt you to restart your browser. Just click Restart Browser.
Once you are done installing the plug-in you should see the Call Phone icon turn to green.
Step 3. Pop your digital phone out. Clicking the Call Phone icon should pop another window that looks like a digital phone.
Step 4. Make sure the flag icon is a US flag because it automatically places its country code. See Image for more info.
If not, you can modify it by clicking the little arrow beside the flag.
Sub-steps for that are:
- Click the little arrow to drop choices.
- Choose United States
Step 5. Make the call.
Dial the US number and then click call.
A tone should sound out telling you that it is trying to reach the number that you dialed.
