Key West Sunset

During our journey to Key West Florida, we found that you can find things to do and have fun even if you are on a budget. There are some things to do in Key West that are free. This is a guide to help you decide what to do and where to go in Key West from someone who's been there.

Things You Will Need

There are plenty of things to do as a tourist in Key West. Duval Street is filled with bars, shops and street vendors who will sell you their wares. You can spend lots of money on tours, riding the Conch Train, glass bottom boat, excursions at sea and so on, but there are a few things that you can do in Key West that won't cost you an arm and a leg. If you want to relax and enjoy this beautiful American Caribbean there are three things you can do for practically no cost.

Key West Cemetery

No Zombies allowed!

CemetaryCemetaryAn amazing Cemetery can be found within walking distance of Duval Street. There are 27 acres of land delegated for this cemetery with some very famous people buried there. Most of the graves today are above ground, kind of like in New Orleans. Very interesting to walk through and see some of the famous people who lived there like Sloppy Joe, the famous bar owner who befriended Ernest Hemingway. You will not be bored as you walk through the Key West Cemetery.

Step 2

Key West Garden Club (23151)The Key West Garden Club is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable things I did when we were in Key West. We were up near the pet beach and came upon this old fort. We weren't sure what it was and so when we walked around to investigate, we found out that the Garden Club took this old fort from the Civil War and through years of hard work, they planted and brought in flowers and trees and made a beautiful place here. We spent quite some time at the Key West Garden Club and it was free. You can donate something if you want to and trust me, you will gladly put a few dollars in their jar.

Step 3

Sunset at Mallory Square (23152)The thing not to miss when you are in Key West is Mallory Square. Cost is FREE . If you've never seen a sunset from the most Southern point of the USA, you have to be standing on the pier at sunset, especially if there are sailboats out in the water. The beauty of it is priceless. Juglars, showmen and vendors fill up the square. It is just a fun time meeting new people, laughing with them and watching the sunset. This is an experience you will never forget.

Yes, you can spend a lot of money in the Florida Keys, but if you do some research there are still plenty of things you can do for FREE or almost free.  If you want to find some affordable places to stay check out a great place we stayed at right on the outskirts of Key West

Tips & Warnings

Parking can be expensive. If you find a garage or parking area, you will pay from 10--15 dollars a day. You may want to leave your vehicle at your hotel and walk. Buses are available and not at all expensive.

There are certain times of the year when it is less expensive to travel to Key West, but that is another story. You can save over 30% depending on what time of year you go.
