Tired of using the dry mushrooms you get at stores. You can grow your own mushrooms at home. Actually, it is quite easy to grow mushrooms in the home garden. Instant mushroom kits are available with spores to grow them at home. Here are a few tips on how to grow mushrooms.

Things You Will Need

mushroom kits with spores, fresh water

Step 1

Many kinds of mushroom kits are available in the market with prices ranging from $20-$30. A mushroom kit includes spores and substrate(medium) from which the spores derive nutrients. Inspect the kit thoroughly to ensure that no fungus is present. Get a replacement kit if fungus is present.

Step 2

Mushrooms require temperatures between 60-80 F and high humidity to grow. Most of the kits come with a plastic tent. The mushroom kits can be kept in a garage or sheltered outdoors. Only use non-chlorinated water to keep the humidity level. Use well or rain water only.

Step 3

Mushrooms grow in cycles. Your first produce will be ready in 7-10 days. Almost half of the spores in the mushroom kit will grow during this time. Produce will be less in the subsequent harvests. There can be slight differences in the time different varieties of mushrooms take to grow.

Step 4

Don't wait too long to cut the mushrooms once they are grown else they may become woody. You can't reuse the kits, but can use the growing medium to make compost heap.
