How to know if you're getting a cold sore

By | Oct 18, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

A cold sore is a manifestation of the herpes simplex virus, and over 90% of the population has it.

A cold sore is painful, unattractive and can be rather embarrassing. There are certain telltale cold sore symptoms that can result in fast treatment which can minimize or stop the cold sore before it develops.

Here are the signs to look for to tell if you are getting a cold sore, increasing your chances of taking early action and preventing or lessening the symptoms of the dreaded cold sore.

Tingling
The first sign of a cold sore is the tingling sensation that occurs, likely somewhere on the lips (but occasionally on the inside of the mouth).

It can feel warm and the tingling symptom of a cold sore can be hard to ignore. If you get this distinct sensation, you can minimize the symptoms of a cold sore if you act quickly.

Once you feel the tingling, apply a cold sore medicine, or, apply and hold an ice cube to the area. The ice cube will slow the flow of blood to the area which will lessen the pain and swelling of a cold sore. Sometimes it can even prevent the cold sore itself.

Swelling
Swelling is a cold sore symptom that often accompanies the tingling sensation. The swelling can be rather uncomfortable and occurs quickly.

There may be no visible sore on the lip or mouth at the time of the initial swelling. Again, an ice cube applied to the area of the swelling can greatly minimize the swelling and the cold sore itself. Fast action is key in preventing a cold sore.

Redness
Redness is a part of one of the first signs of a cold sore and will appear on and around the same general area that the swelling and tingling occurs.

Soreness
A cold sore is rather uncomfortable and becomes sore shortly after the onset of the three previous cold sore symptoms.

Fever and sore throat

Cold sores are sometimes accompanied by a fever and sore throat. If you have a sore throat along with the rest of these symptoms, you may have a cold sore.

Small blisters
Once a cold sore is inevitable, small blisters will appear. This cold sore symptom usually lasts between 7-10 days and will heal quickly shortly after the blister scab falls off.

Cold sores can frequently be prevented if you are aware of the signs of cold sores and cold sore symptoms.

When you know that you have a cold sore symptom, and you react quickly, you can often either stop cold sores entirely, or at least prevent them from getting too severe.

Taking good care of yourself; eating properly and minding your sugar intake, and try not to have too much stress in your life, can also help to prevent cold sore outbreaks. Try and get enough sleep, on a regular basis, as well.

If you get frequent cold sores, you may want to talk to your primary physician about other underlying health issues.

Sometimes cold sores can appear as a result of illness, stress, and poor nutrition and sleep.
