Time; there never seems to be enough of it. We go through our day trying to accomplish as many task as possible but we never seem to quite finish them. We always tell ourselves that there's never enough time or how we wish that there was more time in the day. We often complain about the lack of time but consider the fact that we have the same amount of time in a day as Michael Jordan, Leonardo DaVinci, Shakespeare and many other individuals who have done great things in their lives.
Time is one of the most valuable things that a person has and you either decide to use it wisely or you don't. There's no such thing as a do-over when it comes to time. Once the moment has passed, its passed and there's no way to get it back. So the challenge for each and every one of us is maximize the time we have and there are several easy things you can do to get the most out of your day.
Before you go to bed, take a quick 5 to 10 minutes to plan out your next day. You don't need any fancy iPhone app or computer program, all you need is a piece of paper. Make a list of all the things that you need to accomplish and mentally prepare yourself to complete them. Once you've completed your list, number them depending on their level of importance and get to work on the most important one. Once you've finished a task, get to work on the next one until you've finished them all. This easy activity will immediately bring focus to your day because it gives you direction. Once you get out of bed, you know exactly how your day's going to be because you know exactly what you need to do.
To maximize your time, it's important that we manage the many distractions that occur throughout the day. Activities like checking your email, Facebook and surfing the internet, if left uncontrolled, can waste valuable time that could be better used towards completing your to-do list.
It's important to give yourself time to relax, but be sure to set aside a specific time to do these activities. If you like to surf the internet, allow yourself 15 minutes after lunch and then quickly get back to work. If you're constantly checking your email, set aside 15 minutes in the morning and another 15 minutes in the afternoon to check and respond to emails. Any emails that arrive afterwards can be addressed the following day. Remember: if you're working on a task, focus completely on your task and nothing else.
Have a sense of urgency
When it comes to completing a task, there's no time like the present. If you have a task to complete and you have some time to do it, then take advantage of the available time and get the job done! Don't procrastinate! You never know when emergencies or distractions will occur so it's important to have a sense of urgency.
Time management is about discipline, prioritizing, and having a sense of urgency to get things done. We only have a limited amount of time to accomplish our goals so make a decision to maximize the time that you have. Practice these tips and you'll be surprised how many more task you can accomplish.
