How to pick a pair of selvage jeans
There are many issues that can arise when you are trying to pick out a pair of selvage jeans. One is that most big department stores don't even sell them. Another is that some of the greatest brands are based in Europe or Japan so it can be difficult to get a pair if you live in certain areas.
There are other challenges too. For example, many selvage jeans come in one length. If the jeans are a 38 length but you need a 32 what do you do? You could get them hemmed, you could roll them up, you could wash them and hope they shrink or you could let them stack up. What is the right option?
Since there are challenges when picking a pair of selvage jeans, it's wise to look at some tips to make the process easier.
Tip 1 - Find a pair of jeans that you own the you like the fit of. I suggest doing this because most good denim stores will have the measurements for all their models or will be able to give you the measurements if you request them. It's hard to tell if a jean will fit even if you know the size because there are so many different cuts (ie. slim, regular, relaxed, boot cut, etc).
Tip 2 - Find a store that has a chain stitch machine. The best denim stores will ideally have a vintage chain stitch machine to modify your jeans. This machine will help you get the best look and also the best strength for your hem. You'll still have to decide if you need to get the jeans hemmed (if they are way too long than probably yes) but this is a good option to have.
Tip 3 - Try on the jeans if you can. Try to find a good denim store to go to and try on as many jeans as it takes to find a good fit. There aren't that many great denim stores so you might have to make it a special trip. Since you won't be making these trips very often you can consider buying two or three pairs at once. Selvage jeans are meant to be worn long and hard anyway and the styles are usually classic and don't really change much.
Tip 4 - Don't worry if you mess your jeans up. Selvage denim can be somewhat tricky. It might not be preshrunk so you have to take this into consideration before you buy. This means that it will be harder to gauge the fit. You might shrink them too much and they will be really tight. Make sure you talk to the sales person to figure this out before hand. A great fit is worth the effort.
Selvage jeans can be tricky to buy but the challenges are ultimately worth it. You will wear them a lot and over time they will become more beautiful. Check out this blog for more news and tips about selvage jeans.
