How to protect yourself from the Flu
What is the Influenza? Commonly called the flu, influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by influenza A or B viruses. The flu affects both the upper and lower respiratory system.
Do you have the cold or the flu?
Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish the flu from a cold because they are simular in that they both are contagious viral infections of the respiratory tract. Although some of the symtoms can be the same, the flu is much worse. Both infections cause chest congestion, headache and chest irratability but with the flu you are likely to get a high fever, fatigue, weakness and risk of pneumonia.
It's important for everyone to get a flu shot every year, especially the young, the elderly and those persons who have chronic illnesses such as asthma.
You can also do some things to help protect yourself from coming down with nasty contagious illnesses such as the flu.
Cover your mouth with a tissue or the bend of your elbow when you sneeze or cough. In doing so, you are protecting others from being contaminated.
Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water.
Use an antibacterial product on your hands when out in public and dealing with people at your work. It's a good idea to keep a small bottle of Germ-X in your purse and have a bottle at home and at work to use when you can't wash your hands.
If you are already sick with the flu or a cold, stay at home until you are not contagious anymore which is usually 24 hours after you are symptom free.
