Stay cool and Survive the summer heat

If you are like me, when summer time approaches you are going to have to find yourself ways to stay cool and survive the hot sun. I know that many people love the summer and cannot wait for summer time to partake in summer activities, but in all honesty I am not one of them. I am from California and we do get pretty hot here in the summer time. We do usually have a good streak each summer when we hit the high 90's or low 100's where I am from. I know that those in Arizona or other places may be thinking "What is this guy complaining about" as their area gets much hotter. All I can say to those from those areas is "I don't know how you do it!" For those like me who prefer cool weather, you will find below some tips and advice on beating the summer heat.

The obvious way to stay cool is to put that air conditioner to work. You can stay indoors all day but remember that nothing is free! Working that A/C to much and you will have a pretty hefty bill to pay. What was that? Your rich? O.K. then, maybe you do not have a problem then. Go ahead and crank it up! For most people though, they must consider what the A/C is going to cost them so they must think of some other ideas to stay cool.

If you are a penny pincher then you might want to get some free air conditioning at your local supermarket or indoor mall. Hot days will give you an excuse to do some shopping. Make sure you do some shopping though if you go to the supermarket and do not let Al Bundy be your guide in this one. If you are familiar with the television show "Married with Children" you may have seen the episode where Al takes his family to their supermarket with beach chairs and they all hang out in the freezer section. Doing as Al did will probably get you and your family in lots of trouble so please do some shopping when your there, go ahead and take your time though and enjoy the free air conditioning service.

What else can you do though to beat the summer heat?

Guys may want to wear a guayabera, these are shirts that some will call Mexican wedding shirts or bowling shirts. When thee shirts are made they are actually designed to keep you cool and are supposed to be worn untucked.

Another way to beat the summer heat is to cool your pulse points on your body. What this means is running some cold water for a couple of minutes on your wrist and then putting some cold water on your face and temple area.

Water is of course king when it comes to beating the summer heat. Drinking lots of water will not ever hurt anyone. Drink water even if you are not thirsty so it can cool your body. Stay away from the soda as it will only do the opposite and dehydrate you more.

Try to avoid big meals, eating big protein-laden meals force your body to stoke its metabolic fires. The solution is to break up your eating into smaller, more frequent meals. You'll feel cooler and it's better for you anyway.

If you are having trouble sleeping at night because of the heat, fill up a water bottle with ice water. Use the ice water bottle to cool your knees and ankles. If you keep your head cool your entire body will stay cool. You will  want to make sure that you have a cool and absorbent pillow of organic cotton if at all possible. If you must you can even put your sheets in the freezer for an hour or two before bed.

It may seem obvious to some but do not wear shoes or hats while indoors. Much of the heat from the body is released through the soles of the feet, palms of the hand and the scalp. If you keep these areas cool, you will find that it will make a big difference.

This may be one that you heard of before. When I was a teenager I had a thing for dark colors and I was always told that I was making myself hotter. It is true! You should always wear light color clothing in hot weather, darker colors will absorb the suns rays and you will be warmer. If you're in a situation where you can go without clothes, this can be the most comfortable and natural way to stay cool. For instance, I'm dying of the heat in my house right now and am going to take advantage of the opportunity I have at the moment. I'm going to strip off my clothes and go jump in the shower! STAY COOL!
