How to treat toenail fungus

Nail fungus is very common all over the world. It is named as Onychomycosis in medical terminology. It is developed by tiny organisms that cause infection in finger and toe nails. It affects the area just below the nails. In severe cases toenail fungus treatment is quite hard. Dark, warm and moist places are best for fungus growth.


Fungus grows under toenails. Its causes can be:

  • Breach in the nail that let’s fungus enter
  • Putting on very tight-fitted shoes for longer time
  • Keeping feet damp for extended period
  • Trimming nails very close to the skin that causes multiple cuts in it
  • Poor hygiene

The above mentioned causes are the most common of all.


The signs are:

  • Flaky, brittle or hard texture of the nails
  • Chipping
  • Yellow, brown or blackish tinge
  • A revolting smell under toenails
  • Thickness in nails
  • Pain while touching toenails or wearing shoes

These signs confirm the onset of disease.  

Toenail fungus treatment at home

There are several effective home remedies for toenail fungus treatment. It can be cured at home with various ingredients and chemicals such as:


This mouth wash is used almost in every household. This antiseptic is excellent to remove fungus from nails. Simply soak toes in it for 20 minutes twice daily.


Combine vinegar and warm water in equal proportions and soak toenails in this solution for 20 minutes or more. After that, wipe nails with a dry towel and then with super absorbent paper to make sure no moisture is left. Repeat the process two times daily.

Hydrogen peroxide (3%)

Here is an effective remedy for toenail fungus treatment: Soak affected nails in pure hydrogen peroxide (3%) for at least 20 minutes every morning and at bed time. Be careful while using as it can be harsh to the skin. If it’s too intolerable, equal amount of plain water can be added. Don’t forget to dry with super absorbent paper towel.

Tea tree oil

It is a powerful fungicide as well as antiseptic. Rubbing toenails with a cotton ball dipped in tea tree oil twice daily can help get rid of the disease permanently. It is better to use it three times a day until fungus completely disappears.

Rubbing alcohol

Dip toenails in rubbing alcohol for 20 to 25 minutes two times daily once in the morning and before going to bed. Dry with a towel and absorbent paper.
